To maintain healthy growth and prevent dormancy, Sir Walter Buffalo grass requires watering about two or three times a week when it’s hot or if its colour changes. This turf can withstand prolonged drought but can become pale as it enters dormancy. Overwatering this grass promotes weed growth and may increase the risk of diseases.
The most common types of fertilisers for lawns are standard and slow-release fertilisers. It’s best to choose slow-release fertiliser for Sir Walter Buffalo grass. Unlike standard fertilisers, slow-release fertilisers break down gradually and release nutrients over two to three months. So, you’ll need to apply them less often than standard fertilisers. They’re also more effective. Choose a fertiliser that has an N-P-K ratio of 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 and at least 35% slow-release nitrogen. You should apply fertiliser at a rate of one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet in June and toward the end of July.
Early Buffalo turfs were typically uncomfortable underfoot. Low-quality Buffalo grasses have a rough edge that causes the itchiness often associated with this type of grass. However, Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo turf has tight growth and soft leaves, making it comfortable underfoot. The smooth edge along the leaves doesn’t cause itchiness. Sir Walter DNA Certified is a low allergen grass, making it an excellent option for kids, pets, and those suffering allergies.
After laying Sir Walter Buffalo turf, you should mow it within 10 to 14 days. You can check if your lawn is ready for mowing by tugging on the turf. If the grass lifts, you might want to wait a few more days before trying again. If tugging on the grass leaves you with some grass clippings in your hand, consider mowing. The first mowing should be a gentle trim to avoid scalping your new lawn. Subsequently, you should mow the lawn regularly to keep the level of thatch development in check.
The frequency of mowing Sir Walter Buffalo Sydney Turf depends on your preference. If you desire moderate- to high-quality turf, mowing once a week at the height of 2 to 3 inches is ideal. Low-maintenance areas require mowing every three to four weeks at a height of 3 to 4 inches. You may also leave your Sir Walter Buffalo lawn uncut except for an annual spring mowing at 3 to 4 inches to eliminate old growth.
