Nullarbor Couch

Both Nullarbor Couch and Sir Walter are excellent warm-season grasses, but they suit slightly different needs. Sir Walter is better suited for partly shaded yards thanks to its shade tolerance and broader leaf. If your lawn gets full sun and you prefer a classic, manicured look, Nullarbor Couch is ideal. It has a finer leaf blade, forms a dense turf, and handles high-traffic areas better. Nullarbor is also more drought-tolerant, making it a hardy choice for handling wear and tear, bare patches, different soil types, and dry spells.

TifTuf and Nullarbor are both fine-leaf couch grasses known for their drought tolerance and dense turf. However, Nullarbor Couch grows faster, making it ideal if you want to establish your lawn quickly or recover from damage. It has a slightly deeper green colour and stays greener longer during cooler months. Nullarbor also offers excellent tolerance to broadleaf herbicides, making weed control easier. It's a proven performer for larger or high-use areas, especially in tough Australian conditions.

Couch grass is versatile. Besides being dense, it has an intense colour and is eco-friendly. It's also tough yet comfortable to walk on. These attributes make Couch grass ideal for homes, commercial areas, and sports grounds. It's especially great for professional sports turf fields and premier community sports facilities.

Nullarbor Couch grass performs best when fertilised regularly, year-round, with a high-quality slow-release fertiliser. Fertilising also minimizes thatch build-up. Fertilising two to three times a year, including spring and autumn, helps uphold good overall health.

Couch grass seeds usually take 10 to 14 days to germinate. However, temperature and soil moisture levels may affect germination time. The seeds may take longer to grow during cold seasons and when the ground has insufficient moisture. Couch grass doesn't thrive in shady areas, frosty areas, or in poorly drained soils. It needs at least six hours of direct sunlight and goes dormant during the cold winter months.

A freshly laid Couch lawn requires deep watering at least once per week. Once your Couch grass develops a deep-rooted system, you can give it a deep watering when needed, such as if you notice some wilting. A well-established Couch grass requires watering every 7 to 10 days during summer and much less water during the cool seasons. Couch grass planted on sandy soil often require more watering. If you overlook watering, your Couch grass may brown off slightly. It will green up fast, though, once you water it again or when it rains.

Nullarbor Couch is a low-growing grass and only requires mowing every 7 to 14 days. When cutting Nullarbor Couch, maintain a height of 15 to 25mm for best coverage and presentation. Be sure to use sharp mower blades to avoid tearing and fraying of the leaves. You shouldn't remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade except when dethatching. It's important to dethatch your turf to remove sponginess in spring for the best results.

When properly maintained, Nullarbor Couch develops a good, dense cover. But it will sometimes require weed control. You can use most commercially available weed and pest control chemicals on your Nullarbor Couch lawn, but make sure you read the label before using any product.
